Elementary School Information

The elementary school consists of 1st through 6th grades. The curriculum is primarily A Beka with additional supplemental materials. Bible, reading, spelling, grammar, math, science, and social studies are taught daily. In 1st and 2nd grade there is a continued strong emphasis (from Kindergarten) on phonics.

The After School Program (ASP) is available for students through 6th grade. This program includes supervised recreation, study, rest, reading, snack times, and other creative activities. The ASP follows the same school calendar and observes the same holidays and off days as SMCS. On scheduled half days of school, the ASP begins at noon. Registration for ASP is done on Orientation Day. Prior to any kindergarten child utilizing the ASP, whether frequently, infrequently, or emergency, a notarized affidavit must be on file. This form is available on Orientation Day, where a notary will document your signature. This form allows us to comply with state regulations.

All elementary students are exposed to art, music and physical education. In art, the students are taught various techniques using a variety of art medium and are exposed to art appreciation. The music curriculum teaches music appreciation and general music skills including how to read music. All students are involved in a production each year. Instrumental music via a band program is available for 5th and 6th grade students. Physical education focuses on developing gross motor skills and learning the basics of various competitive team sports.

Field trips are offered at each grade. These extra opportunities are regarded as an extension of the classroom. In addition, each grade participates in at least one service project during the academic year.

Each grade has a specific special event that is unique to that grade. The following is a list of these events:

1st Grade: Career Week focuses on the careers that are represented by the parents in this grade and exposes the students to possible career choices God may be calling them to one day as adults.

2nd Grade: AmeriKids is a production presented for parents which places an emphasis on patriotism. This reinforces the second grade history curriculum.

3rd Grade: Animal Day is the culmination of a science unit in which students have been introduced to research. While studying vertebrates and invertebrates, each student puts together a notebook on a specific animal of his/her choice. On Animal Day, students present a program and have a special lunch with parents.

4th Grade: Students study the westward expansion of America. This culminates in Frontier Day, where students learn the value of teamwork, experience a land rush, and share a special lunch with parents.

5th Grade: Students research specific countries of their choice, present their findings to their classmates, and then have an international meal consisting of food from each of the countries studied.

6th Grade: Students take a trip to Huntsville for a hands-on experience that enhances their classroom study of space.

During the summer Shades Mountain Independent Church offers a Summer Camp (Camp Straight Street) for 5 year olds through 8th grade. You can find information by visiting their website.
